BIPOC

- Black, Indigenous, and People of Color -

The Joffrey Workshop recognizes the need for a more significant BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) presence in our programs and acknowledges the broader need for increased representation in dance education as a whole.

We understand the exclusionary history of ballet and the larger systems that have kept some groups of people from accessing dance. These groups include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, neurodivergence, and disability. The Joffrey Workshop believes that diversity in all its forms is essential to the growth and survival of dance.

We also recognize that equity must be built into the policies, procedures, and practices of an organization. We have thoroughly examined our programs to create more equitable spaces, ensuring that all dancers—regardless of background or ability—feel seen, valued, and supported. By updating our practices to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion, we aim to provide a dance experience that allows all students to thrive.

The Joffrey Workshop will continue to examine and improve our programming so that we can provide the best education for our students. We acknowledge that there are challenges we have not yet encountered, but we remain committed to learning and adapting. With humility, and an awareness of the diverse experiences within our community, we move forward with the intention of making the most positive impact on the students we reach.

Some things we are doing to support our commitment to this work include:

  • Hiring a diverse faculty so that students can see themselves in their teachers.

  • Maintaining an inclusive dress code that respects students' identities, backgrounds, and financial circumstances.

  • Partnering with organizations that provide scholarships to students facing structural inequities and barriers to quality arts education.

  • Prioritizing consent in physical corrections by asking students for permission before offering hands-on adjustments and respecting their autonomy in the learning process.

  • Creating an environment that supports neurodivergent students by offering accommodations that allow all dancers to succeed.

  • Promoting body positivity and inclusivity by fostering a culture that embraces and supports dancers of all body types.

  • Encouraging mental health and well-being by acknowledging the physical and emotional demands of dance training and promoting a culture of open communication and support.

This is an ongoing effort, and we are committed to continued learning, listening, and action.

About
