Insights on Early Childhood Dance

Your child’s first dance class is on the calendar, and the excitement is building. What they’re going to wear, who they might meet, and what dancing will be like can quickly become all they talk about.
We know how special this milestone feels for families. It can also feel a little overwhelming, especially if this is your child’s first structured class experience. That’s completely normal. Our goal at Little Leaps in Wilmington, NC is to make this transition feel joyful, supportive, and stress free for both you and your child.
Here are a few simple ways to feel prepared as the first class approaches.
About 1–2 weeks before class begins:
Review Little Leaps policies and dress code so you know what to expect
Make sure your child has the correct dancewear and shoes
Double check your class day and time in your parent portal
Talk positively with your child about listening to the teacher and meeting new friends
A few days before the first class:
Check your email for informational updates from the studio
Practice getting dressed for dance class at home
Let your child try on their dance shoes so they feel familiar
Remind them that it’s okay to feel excited, nervous, or both
On the day of the first class:
Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early so everyone feels calm and unrushed
Leave toys, snacks, and jewelry at home
Pack dance shoes in a bag so they stay clean and ready for class
It’s very common for children to feel unsure at the start of something new. Some jump right in on day one, while others need a little time to warm up and observe. Both are completely normal. Our teachers are experienced in supporting children at every stage and will meet your child exactly where they are.
At Little Leaps, we focus on creating a welcoming environment where children feel safe, seen, and encouraged. Confidence often grows over the first few weeks as routines become familiar and friendships begin to form.
We are so excited to welcome your child to the studio and can’t wait to dance together soon. 💚
Testimonials

"Joining little leaps with Miss Carrie has been the best experience for my daughter. Each class I get to see her personality and confidence grow. The classes are so engaging for the little ones and parents. They are always full of energy, dancing and laughter (along with the occasional high pitch screams). It’s an amazing way to get yourself and your little one moving while seeing them develop and learn before your eyes through music and play. We love Miss Carrie and you will too!"

"As a former elementary educator turned stay-at-home mom, I couldn’t be more impressed with our experience at Little Leaps. Miss Carrie welcomed us by name the first time we met her and has made us feel like a special part of the Little Leaps community ever since! Her dance classes are perfect for my busy toddler (and even her baby sister). I am constantly amazed at the skills my daughter picks up after each class, such as listening and following directions, moving with coordination, and confidently expressing herself. I love connecting with other mothers and caregivers and seeing my daughter build relationships with her peers. My daughter asks to go to “dance class” almost daily and it has become the highlight of our week!"
