Rachel Newbrough began her dance training at Stage I Dance
Academy in Greenwood, Indiana under the direction of Ms. Beverly Smithey. She
graduated with honors from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science in
Kinesiology with a concentration in Contemporary Dance and a minor in Exercise
Science in 2012. While at IU, Rachel had the distinct honor of performing works
by Martha Graham, Bella Lewitzky, Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott, as well as
Laurie Eisenhower. She has attended the Lar Lubovitch Summer Intensive and the
David Dorfman Dance Summer Intensive and has taken classes from David Hochoy,
David Parsons, Laura Poole, Connie Dinapoli, Sandra Kaufman, Liz Koeppen, Ben
Munisteri and Nicole Wolcott.
Upon graduation, Rachel began dancing professionally as a
freelance performer. Many collaborations include working with Elizabeth Shea Dance
with whom she has had the distinct honor of performing on the Millennium Stage
at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She has traveled to
Israel, NYC, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Philadelphia and throughout the
Midwest to perform at dance festivals and assist in setting works on dancers. She
also enjoys every opportunity given to perform locally in Indianapolis and has
had the pleasure of performing with Dance Kaleidoscope as a guest artist on
multiple occasions. Rachel has collaborated with and danced for choreographers
Rebecca Pappas, Brittany Bain, and Brandon Welch as well as Justin Sears with
Phoenix Rising Dance Company. She has been a participant in IndyFringe multiple
times. Rachel has been seen on nearly every stage in Indianapolis including but
not limited to: The IRT, Clowes Memorial Hall, Murat Theatre, Phoenix Theater, and
The White Rabbit.
In addition to the stage, you can find Rachel dancing in two
films. “Breath | Light | Stone” a film by Allen Hahn & Elizabeth Shea as
well as “Beautiful by Design: The Indiana University Bloomington Campus.” A
third dance film project with Elizabeth Shea is currently in post-production.
Rachel currently works as Artistic Director at her beloved
Stage I Dance Academy where her dream of dancing began at the age of four. Her
choreography on students has been continuously recognized for its creativity
and uniqueness at multiple dance competitions/conventions throughout the
Midwest. Rachel also serves as Vice President and instructor for nonprofit,
Dance Every Journey, a program that brings dance classes to senior adults and
veterans in Johnson County, something that she is very passionate about. Rachel
also taught for 8 years as an Adjunct Instructor at Indiana University in the
Department of Theatre, Drama & Contemporary Dance. She has been involved
with the IU Summer Dance Intensive for High School Students and served as a
dance instructor at Nashville Dance Studio. Rachel regularly participates in
professional development courses to better herself in roles as Artistic
Director and dance educator. She strives to serve her students and families to
the best of her abilities and inspire them to love dance and community.
