What to Wear to Class
Why is the Dress Code Important?
It’s a common question to hear from dance parents and students alike: What purpose does the dress code actually serve? We’re glad you asked! 3rd Street Dance’s dress code was established for a few very important reasons:
● Safety
The number one factor in establishing a dress code is for all students’ safety in class. A basic leotard and tights, along with hair pulled back and the appropriate shoes, ensures that there are no extraneous clothes or jewelry that can become hazardous. The dress code also helps teachers see that students are using the right muscles and alignment in order to learn the correct movements in class.
● Modesty
At 3rd Street Dance, we want every student to feel good about trying his or her best in class. Following the dress code helps us make sure that everyone is appropriately covered ... but not so covered that their movement is restricted! We want to encourage their confidence by helping them feel comfortable with what they wear in the studio.
● Respect
A dress code is one way students show respect for their peers and their teachers. It demonstrates an understanding of how a dance class operates, with minimal distractions and the ability to move easily for any combination of steps or choreography. It shows that the students are prepared to learn and are willing to save their fashion statements for outside of class.
● Practicality
Because leotards and tights also often serve as a versatile base layer for costuming, it makes sense that students become accustomed to them during class time. Just as swimmers wear swimsuits and basketball players wear jerseys, dancers wear leotards and tights to have the freedom of movement required to practice correctly and efficiently.
Everyone benefits with the dress code in place: dancers can learn comfortably and instructors can teach efficiently! At 3rd Street Dance, we take pride in our dress code and are happy to help you with questions at any time.
Preparing For Your Child's First Dance Class
Your child’s first dance class at 3rd Street Dance is on the calendar and it’s all your child can talk about … what they’re going to wear, who they’re going to meet, what they’re going to do. It’s seemingly endless anticipation!
We know how exciting it is for you and your child to get ready for their first dance class. Sometimes it can feel a little overwhelming too—like learning a whole new “dance language” for this new adventure! Rest assured that the feeling is normal, and we’re here to make sure you feel informed and organized for that first class. Check out our easy recommendations for being as prepared as possible for the big day:
2-4 weeks before:
➔ Read through 3rd Street Dance’s policies and dress code
➔ Obtain the correct dance wear and shoes. Don’t forget we have a great dance boutique right in our studio!
➔ Check the schedule to confirm your child’s class day and time
1-2 weeks before:
➔ Visit us at the studio with your child (if you haven’t already!)
➔ Talk with your child about what it will be like to listen to the teacher and meet new friends
➔ Practice getting dressed for dance class
On the day of:
➔ Plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so your child doesn’t feel rushed
➔ Leave any jewelry or toys at home
➔ Pack your child’s dance shoes in a bag so they are not worn outside
Remember that your child might feel anxious before the first class, and that’s OK! Our teachers will put them at ease and make sure they feel welcome in the studio. Keep reassuring your little one that it’s normal to feel nervous before trying something new, and that you’re proud of them for making the effort.
n our experience at 3rd Street Dance, most students take time to “warm-up” to the routine of coming to dance class, and it may take them a few weeks to feel completely comfortable. Some students, of course, jump right in with no hesitation! We love them all the same and are equipped to support them either way. No matter what, we look forward to seeing your little one in class soon!

•Caramel tights must be worn for recital
Hair: Ponytail for class, bun required for pictures, rehearsal and recital

Tights: Capezio caramel or skin tone tights with jazz shorts, tight fitting jazz/yoga pants. Modern students will require transition tights if shorts are worn

Inclement Weather Policy
• In the event of inclement weather, a message will be left on the studio answering machine after 2:00 pm. regarding the status of classes. An email will be sent out as well.
• Please note that we do not necessarily follow school closings as roads are often cleared by the time studio classes begin.
• If district 303 closes, morning children’s classes will be canceled.
• Any canceled classes may be made up on your own time from our regular schedule of classes.
• In the event there is not a make-up class available, a replacement class will be scheduled.
