Pilates Instructor Training FAQ’s
Pilates Education Australia is built on face-to-face, hands-on training, where you learn skills that can only be developed in the room — observing bodies, touching, adapting, and teaching in real time. You graduate with practical teaching confidence, not just theory, supported by experienced, knowledgeable mentors who guide you every step of the way. With nearly 30 years of industry experience, our focus is on creating intelligent instructors who can teach safely, clearly, and with integrity in real studio environments.
Becoming a Pilates Education Australia instructor positions you with an industry-recognised qualification that employers trust.
You graduate with practical, job-ready teaching skills, hands-on studio experience and the confidence to step straight into paid teaching roles. The comprehensive curriculum ensures you understand both foundational principles and contemporary programming — giving you the versatility today’s studios look for.
In short: you don’t just qualify, you become employable, capable and ready to build a sustainable Pilates career.
Yes! Every module is a hybrid of online learning for your theory and anatomy, then face-to-face time for all repertoire. Your course fees include 2 years access to your online learning materials and video library.
Pilates Education Australia Pilates training courses are set up in modules.
Each module is carefully structured to support your growth in clear, achievable stages, allowing you to absorb and apply what you learn with confidence.
The course components are intentionally sequenced to build upon one another, strengthening your understanding and teaching ability over time. While certain units can stand alone, they are designed to work together as part of a cohesive pathway toward your selected qualification ensuring your learning feels connected, practical and purposeful.
For example, if you want to become a Mat instructor, you are required to complete Fundamentals, Mat Essentials, Mat Progressions and Mat Challenges to be eligible for your final Mat exam. Mat Progressions cannot be completed before Mat Essentials.
You sure can! All of Pilates Education Australia courses are module based, so you can join us for a single module. This is the perfect format for continued education for those who are already qualified, or a nice way to dip your toes in before committing to a full course if you’re considering a career change.
For students new to teaching, modules are required to be taken in their hierarchical order. For example, Fundamentals must be taken before Mat Essentials or Reformer Essentials.
Our program, delivered in partnership with Pilates Education Australia, is designed to give you both depth of knowledge and practical confidence.
You’ll explore fundamentals, Pilates principles, anatomy, classical and contemporary repertoire and programming in a structured, progressive way while also gaining valuable hands-on teaching experience in a real studio environment.
At Stomping Ground Studios, we place strong emphasis on mentorship, community and the development of your individual teaching voice. You’re encouraged to ask questions, think critically and grow into the kind of instructor you want to become.
By the time you graduate, you won’t just hold a qualification, you’ll feel confident, capable and connected to a professional community that supports your next steps.
Your practice hours are an essential part of your development as an instructor. While they are self-reported and completed on an honour system, your educator can clearly see the difference when a student has consistently engaged in their required practice before final assessment.
To support your learning, we require a portion of your Self Mastery hours to be completed at Stomping Ground Studios at our discounted student rate: 5 hours for Mat & Reformer students and 10 hours for Comprehensive students. (Exceptions may be considered for students living in remote areas.)
We also strongly encourage you to complete observation, self mastery and assisted teaching hours across a variety of studio environments. Learning from different instructors exposes you to diverse cueing styles, hands-on approaches and programming strategies. It sharpens your critical thinking and helps you develop clarity around what effective, thoughtful teaching looks like and how you want to show up as an instructor.
Fundamentals is your first step into the modular system and the perfect place to begin your Pilates teaching journey.
From there, you’ll move into Mat Essentials or Reformer Essentials - each module building your skills, confidence, and understanding, guiding you steadily toward becoming a capable, empowered instructor.
Every step is designed to help you grow, practice what you learn, and feel ready to share your knowledge with others.
Because our courses are module based, you can begin instructing classes as soon as you feel ready. Once you have completed your face-to-face days and the online quizzes for each course, you will receive a certificate of completion. We highly encourage our students to work with a mentor in their early days to build their skills and continue to learn on the job while you are completing your course.
Pilates Education Australia offers you the opportunity to bring our education into your facility. Contact us for more information by calling 08 8362 7902 or emailing info@stompinggroundstudios.com.au
Yes, Pilates Education Australia courses offer an assessment-based certificate of completion. This certificate is recognised with the Pilates Association Australia (PAA) and AUSactive.
We love supporting students through every step of their training, and completing your program here at Stomping Ground Studios gives you the full benefit of our hands-on guidance and studio community.
If life takes you interstate, you can continue your journey seamlessly. We’ll connect you with other Pilates Education Partners across Australia so you stay supported, learning, and growing no matter where you are.
To complete your chosen program, you’ll undertake a final exam with both practical and written components.
The practical exam requires you to demonstrate your skills in class programming, selecting appropriate exercises, applying progressions and regressions, ensuring safe and correct equipment setup, and performing a self-demonstration of exercises to show your understanding and control of the Pilates repertoire.
The written exam focuses on class programming, giving you the opportunity to show your understanding of Pilates principles and how to structure a session effectively.
Yes. Once you decide to commit to one of the Pilates Instructor courses you have the option to pay up front for the whole program or we can set up a payment plan for you. Payment for both options is due 21 days prior to the start date of the program or module.

COMPLETING THE PILATES INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM
To become a fully qualified Balanced Body Pilates Instructor (Mat, Reformer and Comprehensive) you must complete all required coursework, hours and pass a written and practical exam to demonstrate your teaching abilities.
Students do not need to test out individually for Mat, Reformer and Apparatus. Students only need to test out when they have reached the highest level they intend to complete. For example, students completing only the Mat will test out after mat coursework and hours, students completing Mat and Reformer will test out after Mat and Reformer coursework and hours, and students finishing the Comprehensive program will test out after they have completed all of the coursework and hour requirements.
Once you have completed all hours and are ready to test out, fill out and send the test out application to the Balanced Body office. Balanced Body will review your records, approve a test out and send specific details to you.
During the exam your teaching skills will be evaluated in the following areas:
Correct set–up and execution of the exercises
Client safety
Appropriate sequencing
Appropriateness of the exercises to the client or class
Understanding and application of the principles
Cueing and the ability to communicate with your client or class
If students do not pass on the first try, Balanced Body will discuss what they need to focus on in order to pass and set up a timeline for completion.
The Written
ExamThe written exam is a combination of multiple choice, short answer questions and an essay. The written exam covers exercise progressions, programming, appropriateness, organization, equipment setup & maintenance, special population & safety protocols.

Testimonials

My daughter loves Stomping Ground Studios so much that she is doing two classes a week. She says "it is the best studio in Adelaide. I love Stomping Ground Studios because the teachers are nice and we learn really cool moves."
Martin S.

The Equipment Pilates classes here completely changed my life as in the past I had chronic shoulder pain and headaches and my life quality was low and I relied on Ibuprofen a lot. The instructors here are incredible at working with you, your body and injuries to build strength where it is needed, without flaring up pain. Could not recommend enough!
